Was the Mad Titan really “mad”?

For those who have not seen Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War or its sequel, Avengers: Endgame, the main antagonist is an alien from the Jovian moon Titan named Thanos with innately formidable strength and ambition. He is briefly mentioned (and shown) in preceding Marvel films but takes center stage in these two movies. His goal: To collect the six Infinity Stones spread out across the universe and harness their power in order to instantly eliminate “half of all life in the universe.” While this seems dastardly and in no apparent need of explanation, Thanos spends a not insignificant amount of the movie’s runtime explaining his reasoning to various characters. His justification: The resources of the universe are finite, and if life is left “unchecked, it will cease to exist.”
